I hope I'm not stealing anyones idea but I came up with a idea for making MRE boxes look better . The set from Tamiya fit the need for these pretty good but by just gluing them they end up looking kinda sad . They need that full look so I used some florist foam . I took some in progress pics to explain what I'm up to .

This is what my old boxes look like - not very good

the foam bricks

The filler block cut to size

Putting the block into place with elmers glue

It is not a bad idea to cut the block a hair too big then just trim it to the right size prior to sealing the box .

Before and after pic of the boxes - the improved one is on the right

This also works great on filling out tarps

Hi. Hey, interesting idea here. I am also having some trouble getting this MRE boxes to glue together correctly and was considering using carved balsa wood inserts to help with this, but figured it would be just too time-comsuming. Your idea looks like it's a whole lot easier to do, not to mention simpler as well. Also like the idea of filling in under tarps and various other covers too with this method. What kind of material are you using for the 'cover' on your last photo there? Just curious as it looks good.

Thanks and take care, Sgirty

Hi Sgirty , the materal used is a old triangle bandage . Tankers use these for the dust masks you see in Iraq some times . You can get them at Army surplus stores for a couple of bucks and they are big enough to use on several tanks . Glad that this is of help to you

Good idea with the foam.....I'll snag some from the little woman's greenhouse.

I like the look of the tarp as well.

Thanks!!
