While we're on the topics of best and worst war movies, why not share with us your favorite/most memorable war movie character, actor or quote your favorite line?

Initially, I was thinking of opening this topic with announcing your favorite NCO (Sergeant/Petty Officer) character but, what the hell, lets roll with any of your favs!

If you're a War Movie Junkie, like me, you probably have many, but there is one sergeant that always stands out a little taller than the others (tho he was quite short!) The MP top sergeant in "The Dirty Dozen" Sergeant Bowden played by Richard Jaeckel who carried out all of Major Reisman's (Lee Marvin)
orders to the letter and with pleasure to the dismay of the Dirty Dozen convicts!

...And of course, ALL the characters of "Kelly's Heroes" which has to be the all time best "Character" war movie ever made! Hell, I think I can quote you the entire script of that one!

Audie Murphy in to Hell and Back can't beat playing yourself in a movie. Gregory Peck in Pork Chop Hill also is a great one.

Tough one I have so many!

John Wayne as Sgt Stryker in Sands of Iwo Jima.
Hitting the beach they find themselves pinned down... A young private begins to lose it "we got to get out of here? We gotta get out of here!" And starts to get up exposing himself to enemy fire. (In perfect classic movie fashion) John Wayne grabs him by the shirt and throws him back down to cover and says "if you're nervous count your toes, I'll do the mastermindin' around here" then calmly takes out a cigarette and lights it, takes a few puffs and surveys the situation.

Slim Pickens as Maj Kong in Dr. Strangelove reading through the contents of the "survival kit" I love how he says " one bible combination rooshin phrasebook" that movie has a ton of laughs!

Before R. Lee Ermey there was Jack Webb starring in "The D.I." A flic definately worth checking out.

Some great ones mentioned already here.
I always liked Gunny Highway in Heartbreak Ridge and the Sergeant played by Lee Marvin in The Big Red One. I also liked Ernest Borgnine as General Worden in The Dirty Dozen even though he wasn't in it all that much. Plus Marvin, again, was great as Major Reisman in the same film.

Going slightly into the Sci-Fi War movie field, two of my favourites would have to be Sgts Zim and Apone from Starship Troopers and Aliens, respectively, and in the more traditional War movie field, Gunnery Sgt Tom Highway from Heartbreak Ridge, as you can't beat Clint Eastwood!

Some good ones out there, guys.

Have to agree with Matt's choice of Colour Sergeant Bourne (Nigel Green) - An absolute all time classic NCO!

... and Randy's GnySgt Hartman (R Lee Ermy) DI roll will probably never be topped. My second to him would probably have to be GnySgt Foley (Louis Gossett, Jr.) "An Officer and a Gentleman"

Some of my other favorite NCO portrayals that I felt hit the mark:

CPO Klough (Harvey Keitel) "U-571"
SGM Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) "Glory"
SGT Buster Kilrain (Kevin Conway) "Gettysburg/Gods and Generals"
SGM Plumley (Sam Elliott) "We were Soldiers"
MCPO Billy Sunday (Robert DeNiro) "Men of Honor"
SGT MacKenzie (William Houston) "Age of Heroes" - Love that Scottish beret!
...and lets not forget SSG Zeke Anderson (Terry Knox) from the old 80's Vietnam TV series "Tour of Duty"

Yeah, Lee, I'll give it up to SGT Zim, also!

Steve McQueen as the Cooler King, Hiltz in the Great Escape. It turns out that he was a better stunt rider on a motorcycle than the Stunt rider they hired. He even portrayed the German chasing him.

I always liked Richard Burton as Flying Officer David Campbell in The Longest Day pointing out the German he killed had his boots on the wrong way round.

I could list 100 favorite movies but I have one special quote, and I'm not even sure who the actor was. In "Back to Bataan", a Japanese officer was complaining about Philippine resistance fighters and said, "I don't understand. I send out fifty men, they see nothing. I send out ten men, they don't come back."

Surprise no one's mentioned Humphrey Bogart as MSG Joe Gunn from Sahara.

I could almost see him as the guy who instructed Moriarty from Kelly's Heroes in Fort Knox Armor School.

Second favorite is Moriarty himself."crap"
"I've been thinking nothing but positive waves about that bridge!"
"We was assaulted by them Tigers in the bocage country!"

And then Oddball himself. I knew a few tank commanders who patterned themselves after him. Completely crazy when not on the tank. All business when on the tank. Was told plenty of times while a driver to "Get back in your hole!"

Have to agree with Duane's mention of James Coburn's Sgt Steiner from "Cross of Iron". I felt he really nailed the part.

Many have already been mentioned, but MAJ Dick Winters of Band of Brothers, played by Damian Lewis is one of my favorites, very believable (as are the other caracters of BoB).
