Hi,

I'm currently building a Sturer Emil that has REALLY nice interior details. One of these is the wooden fighting compartment floor.

I was wondering if any of you might care to share his/her technique to achieve a realistic, weathered, treaded on look to this?

The way I plan to start out is mainly following the steps below:

  • a light wood as the base color
  • hairspray in preparation for chipping
  • panzer gray
  • do the chipping only leaving the gray in the corners and unused areas
  • some dry brushing with another (WHICH!?) color in the heavily used areas

Is there a better way to achieve this?

Many thanks in advance!

Just my two cents, I'd do a darker wood basecoat and then drybrush with a lighter color or a lighter shade of that wood color. As far as actual colors go, yellow ochre, khaki, something tan, or also a light gray. Wood seems to really gray with a lot of use and exposure to the elements.

I usually do wood effects in this order:
Black base coat or primer coat
Darkest shade of wood (dark brown)
Lightened shade of wood (medium brown)
Yellow ochre, tan, whichever you choose drybrush

Hope that helps, Hellbent

This is how it looks right now. In the end it probably looks more like mud then used wood...

I might add some more pigments to the central part and probably apply a sienna oil wash when everything is done.

Any thoughts? Thanks a lot!

I have recently seen an article (which I can't find right now) where you print a wood pattern on a blank white decal sheet, then apply it to the area. After sealing it, you can then do a hair spray method of chipping over it. It look very good.

That sounds like an uncommon technique... so you've got my attention, sir!

Please post a reference in case you come across it again sometimes. Thanks!
