If you need a lot of barbed wire why not make your own? I take nylon window screen and cut out one strand. This leaves 'barbs' on either side of the strand. You can make hundreds of scale feet of barbed wire in a short period of time. Paint it dark brown and twirl it from each end. It's easy to do but not so easy to describe. Here are a couple photos of some barbed wire using this technique:

I like Charles' elegant and realistic-looking method. Another option is Marty Wasiak's method, although much more labor intensive to be sure:
