A friend recently got a Makerbot Replicator and, knowing I'm into building and painting models, we decided to collaborate on a 1/72 model of the Raven air/space craft from the movie Elysium. After my friend's six months (!) of modeling the ship in Solidworks and printing test pieces, I was able to finish sanding and assembling the prototype model this weekend.

The next steps will be some experimentation to figure out the best method for priming and painting ABS plastic, and then painting, custom decals, and weathering.

Cameron, that's a beauty! I love such scratch building/printing work! Will you be making it a Kit?

We will be printing and painting a couple of models for ourselves, but not making a kit for sale. We don't own the rights to the design, so we would be crossing into questionable legal territory there. As long as we keep it at the "fan art" level we're okay.

Wow that is so cool!

I have been browsing deviant art, and specifically stuff from Elysium and District 9, and wondering how to build a kit. And then the next day I stumble on this thread! Superb!

Hey Graeme - at the last BiMoSciFiComicCon I picked up this book at the WETA shop. They make some cool collectable stuff here but either sold out/very expensive. Also have some Elysium stuff on their site naturally.

Jim, lol, bimonscificon!

Yes - saw the D9 page earlier. To the point where I have been photoshop 'painting' my Archangel G36C in white/orange/black. I may go through with it to see if anyone gets the reference on the gun forums.

Saw a few pages from the book online, it looks pretty well done. Wondering if D9 will have a sequel.
