Vietnam War History

1969 - Airman 1st Class John L. Levitow threw himself on an activated , smoking magnesium flare and then threw it out of the Douglas AC-47 gunship he was aboard while bleeding heavily from shrapnel injuries. On May 15, 1970, U.S. President Nixon awarded Levitow with the Medal of Honor for his actions that saved his fellow crewmembers after their plane was hit by North Vietnamese mortar fire.
