Pilots Rely Too Much on Automation, Panel Says
Many Aviators Have Difficulty Manually Flying Planes, Study Commissioned by FAA Finds
Way back when the FAA decided that spin recovery was scary and took it out of the Private Pilot syllabus; they also de-emphasized stall recovery, instead focusing on pre-stall detection. I recall that stall-spin-crash-burn boo-boos went up in the 1980s until they decided to return to teaching pilots how to actually fly the airplane. Now they are recognizing what professional pilots have been warning for decades - sims and fly-by-wire are useful but nothing can compensate for proficient (Not merely current) aircrew who know how to get an aircraft off its back when they screw up and let it get away from them.
