Hi Folks!
Been rummaging through my cave trying to get some order into things. So I'm looking for a good way to organise my spares box. Right now I have them in bags by scale, some on sprues, others not. How do you do it?
On the sprue?
By topic? E.g. Planes, military, ships, or even Sherman, Tiger, Cromwell?
By era?
By scale?
I'd like to hear your systems.
Cheers!
Stefan

I group them by type, in my drawer organizer. For kit specific things(aka what I am working on), I have clear divided hobby organizers. Room for two to three kits, in each.

I use a drawer organizer on my bench. Smaller itms go into these drawers, which are labeled by item in them; i.e. road wheels, track, weapons, engine parts, etc., etc.
You can see the organizer on the left side of my desk.
I also have vehicle specific parts in old model boxes, like seperate boxes for M113 parts, HMMWV parts, Abrams parts, etc.

During a "we are moving" sales at a local "Conrad" I got a couple of DIN A5 sized closeable boxes intendet for screws for 1€ each. Each box has three partitions and has a clear lid. Stackable (with feet/grooves) as well

Organise?
Ja sure. I put an RFID tag on each piece, run a Oracle RAC to keep the data and a Lucene base search engine all tied to a J2EE application

I keep things in a drawer organizer. I keep the left over bits in the drawers by country/type.. example.. Ammo boxes and crates one for Allied, one for Axis. U.S. vehicle bits, leftover German half tracks bits and so on..
not perfect but I can find things pretty easy..
Larger stuff like leftover sherman running gear I keep in labeled ziploc bags in a shoe box...

Let'zee...
...because I am air, sea and land (free wheelin' and rail) I have 9 different cases. The original 4 (OK, 3 of them - any of you old enough to remember these?):
"Military" - figures and vehicles:
Infantry weapons by Axis or Allied
Crewed weapons
Wheels and tires
Interior parts
Munitions
Supplies
Figures
Miscellaneous
Big miscellaneous
Air:
Engines
Cockpits
Super-detail
Crew
Interior
Weapons
Gear
Canopies
External stores
Miscellaneous
Railroad:
Figures
Building parts
Electrical
Trackside (switch stands, signals)
Cargo
Loco parts
Rolling stock
Couplers
Miscellaneous
Ships:
Masts
Turrets
Guns
Hull
Fittings
Boats
Miscellaneous
Those filled up quickly. Now I have a 15 drawer bin filled with zillions of items:
More aircrew
Engines
Landing gear
Pitots and antennaes
Bombs, missiles, rockets
Jet stuff
Prop stuff
Cockpit
Radios
Airfield and hanger stuff
So much more...
Railroad;
Steam loco parts
Diesel loco parts
Piping and fittings
Cab interior
Separate ladders and grab irons
Underframe
Wheels and brake gear
Passenger car -
- interior
- exterior
Lighting
Zillions of other parts
Wheel sets
Couplers
Miscellaneous
I have a small bin of stuff I cast.
A small bin of parts from stored models.
Lots of Miscellaneous items.
Controlled chaos. That's what I've got.

I use an old type setting tray. Lots of little compartments and as it is not very deep, I have a good chance of finding what I am looking for.

Thanks guys, some of you must have impressive spares boxes... So I sifted through all my parts, threw away some I'll never use but kept most of them. I kept them in bags but will keep a lookout for some adequate storage. Thanks for the inspiration!
