I have had a few thoughts lately about how nice it would be to know how to make my own resin cast parts. So it's prompted me to "go to school" on the topic, so to speak.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction on how to get started for someone who's never done it? A few key questions:

* Are there any good books or DVDs on the topic?
* What are the best starter kit materials sets to buy?
* Are there better or worse types/designs of parts to try first?

Thanks!

hey Jake, I use a brand called Alumilite. here's a link

there's the rubber, for making the mold, then I use Alumilite Super plastic casting resin.

places like AC Moore also carries it. The resin has a very quick cure time, around 3 minutes!

There was a good how to article in finescale modeler a few months ago..using this set. I could send ya the mag if you'd like, it's just sitting on my shelf.

I've only done stuff like tires, bags and a drop tank for a 1/48 plane, worked great !

Hope this helps you get started..let me know about the mag

Hi Jake,

I have a friend who started his own small casting business about 2 years ago. The biggest problems he had was filling the mould completely nad getting rid of bubbles. After much experimentation he now first pulls the mould in a vacuum to draw the resin in the mould completely, then he puts it under pressure to mimimize the last remaining tiny bubbles.
