Basically you can think of it this way. 1 scale inch equals 35 inches in actual size. So, for rough estimates on buildings, etc., 1 inch = 36 inches or 3 feet. If you measure a door frame, it is about 7 feet high and 30 inches , therefore 1/35 th door would be about 2 1/3 inches high and about 3/4 inches wide. If you continue the thought process, you can measure any object and guestimate the scale size. This works well for bulildings and other objects.

I use Sclac by Frank Crenshaw, it is a very versatile scale calculator. Just put in the proper scales and how you measured, and it does all the work. You can get it here:

I use a 1:35 scale ruler for all my scratch building. The one I have cost about $3.00 at my local hobby shop(Hobby Town USA). One side is the 1:35 scale and on ther other side it has true inch and MM markings.

You measure anything in centimeter and divide that by 35.
Metrics can be so convenient, can't they ?

Keep in mind the difference between "exact" conversions and what the eye will see. In other words examples like the second floor of a building should be a little shorter than the first and so on. The side walls should taper slightly (perspective).
Our whole modeling world is illusion. How else could we get a rock or a face the size of a pea to look real?
I got a book in my reference collection that does a great job on this. My wife, who was an art major, helps me, too. You want the "perceived" reality of the people looking at your work to be taken as "real". These perspective and illusion concepts accomplish that in a subtle way.
