In my quest to get an academy hummer, I wondered why a kit that still appears to have some demand isn't made anymore. I continued to think until the pain got to bad, but before that happened I wondered what other great kits are now OOP. So I thought I would ask what the 5 best OOP kits are in everyones opinion?

1. DML M4A1 75mm
2. Academy M966 TOW Hummer (and other variants)
3. Tamiya new Willys MB Jeep (or so the rumor goes)
4. DML T-26E3 Pershing
5. Any Bandai 1:48 scale armor kit

Care to go into a little more detail here, Sabot? I guess I'm confused by the 'new Willy's MB jeep' part. There's one or two on the shelf at the Hobby Lobby here; should I pick it up? :-)

As for best OOP kits... these are really more like 'favorite OOP kits'...
All are made by Ertl
1)X-wing fighter
2)Star destroyer
3)Luke Skywaler's snowspeeder
4)A-wing fighter
5)Vader's TIE
Sooo, not much of a list. But hey, I don't really know too much about OOP kits - yet! #:-)

Hey Yoda Man,

Would you like an A-Wing (I believe that what it is) by ERTL.? I have one from 20 years ago. May be partially built. Haven't looked at it it a while.

I do have one A-wing kit. Here's a brief history:

I win kit off eBay
Kit arrives and then sits on shelf for four months
I apply spray paint and brush green paint on areas to signify ship from Green Squadron
I try to apply weathering with drybrushing
Drybrushing turns out horrible
I resist urge to smash model with hammer
Kit sits on shelf for another two months
I try to strip off paint using turpentine........
I let parts sit in turpentine for one hour....
some paint comes off, model now has wierd looking texture.....
Model will sit on shelf for another four months

In answer to your question Ranger, sure! I think the one I've got now is beyond repair... Time to check the forums and see if there's a how-to on removing paint.

I believe it has something to do about using the "Jeep" name since it is a registered trademark of the Daimler-Chyrsler Corporation (or so the Jeep commercials say). Ironic that the Germans now own Jeep name? I'd grab Jeeps much like I do with Academy Hummers...especially when I see them cheap (less than $15).

You have a rather strange list. I have all of those kits, several still unbuilt in the box. They are nice items, but as far as quality of molding, "accuracy" (is there such a thing with a fantasy subject?) and and fit/ease of assembly, they are all lacking. MPC was the original manufacturer of the Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi kits. Vader's TIE and the Snow Speeder were probably the two best fitting kits. AMT/Ertl started getting the kits right by the time they produced the double set of TIE fighters. Nice kits, also The Phantom Menace kits were not too bad in quality. I especially liked the Trade Federation Tank. I would have liked a kit of Darth Maul's ship.

Well, it's more of a favorites list than a 'best of' list. I'm a Star Wars geek, so that should explain it!
