Hi all
I am up for suggestions.
I need a good pair of shears for cutting PE. I have the Tamiya curved, but they went dull pretty quick, almost like the steel was not hardened, and I only used them on photo etch. I would like a straight pair and one with a curve. I really do not want to by 5 or 6 pairs till I find one so I am asking help. What do you like to use. Thanks
Jim

Thank you I will look into them. I used their track side cutters when I was into Model Railroading for cutting track and they were great

Doesn't get any better than Xuron.

I have both the 440

http://xuron.com/index.php/main/consumer_products/2/29

And the 9180ET

http://xuron.com/index.php/main/consumer_products/2/80

The 440s are good, the 9180ET is supreme. Really can't go wrong with either, but the 9180s are much better.

The 9180ET has longer blades, and alot sharper. I used the 440s myself and had some trouble getting in and cutting some parts, found they would slip slightly before biting into a piece of PE. The 9180s are damn sharp all the way through, like a hot knife through butter sharp.

They are about $10 more than the 440s, but worth it in my book:

Currently in stock as well! LOL

Would these be good for cutting brass/copper shim as well?

I would think so, I mean really that is all a PE sheet is, just a sheet of brass/stainless steel with parts cut out of it.

Could probably go fairly thick with the brass/copper as well, I would think you would have no problem cutting even a 1mm thick piece of brass/copper.

I've used the Xurons myself, and while they're good, I still like going with an old fashioned hobby knife #10 blade. You butt it up against the edge of the PE, and the curved edge of the blade allows you to roll the blade down and chop through the PE. A standard flat edge blade would require you to drag the blade tip through part you want to cut, possibly skipping onto the part surface itself, or even warping the part. The chopping action of the curved blade goes cleanly through the part like a scissor, but unlike that you don't need to clumsily angle the tips of a scissor into the recesses of a PE fret.

I ordered the 440 and a nice sprue cutter from Xuron.
Thanks for the 411.
