Would it be possible to enable creating a new topic on the latest posts page?

Hmmm... yes, but I need to create a system for selecting the right forum for the new topic. I changed this a long while back to only work FROM a forum you are already in, etc. There was a technical or user interface reason I did this. I think people weren't selecting the forum some of the time.

Or, its no that simple to do and without some user discupline, it could lead to a mess.

It's a pity, the latest post page has become (and the new lay-out contributed largely to this) my only entrypoint fo the forums; it's really handy as it gives immediately the complete new content since my previous visit to the site.

Hi Jim,

I'm not fussed about this new tool, but if I was coding it and knew there were "compliance" problems I'd have the new button open a drop-down list of available forums, and have it only open up the whole "new topic" details page once a forum was picked.
