Hi, a small update. the wheels are mounted temporarily pending a solution to sand tire (tire tamiya Pink Panther, as suggested by nick , or to scratch). anyway it will have expanded mud guard

Try to find a hobbyshop that carries a lot of cast metal cars, you could get lucky.

This is just a thought but it's worked for me in the past. If the LRDG Chevy tires are much too big how about using them from a smaller scale? I don't know, but maybe a large truck in 1/48 would yield tires about the right size? Also, the rims look a bit like the ones used on later SAS Land Rovers. Maybe a suitable tire could be found there?

Building in a non-traditional scale has lead me to think way outside the box and to look for basic shapes, wheels and building elements in pretty unusual places. Try cruising the toy and craft departments next time you're shopping. Usually even a obviously toy-like toy will have nicely detailed tires that you could adapt. I once found the perfect rim and tire combo for a friend's build on a 7 dollar cheapo toy.

And don't be afraid to chop these things up. Take that wheel and tire and drill the center out of it and replace it with one from a kit carved down to fit. Same goes with basic shapes. Don't reinvent the wheel (literally) if you don't have to. Once you develop an eye for these things you'll find huge amounts of scratchbuilding material everywhere.

I do not normally go to the scratch build forum, but glad I did this time.
Very interesting build. I've seen a few photo's of the Coast Guard and the one's built by some Army unit's in the ETO and thought it would be a interesting build, so it's nice to see some one go beyond the thought stage.
I plan to follow you're build and may be this winter I'll start my own.

Steph I was thinking about you're build at work today and the idea of maybe tire's from a toy ATV or a ridding lawn mower might have the right tread or close to it.
