In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

-LCol John McRae
Canadian Army Medical Corps, 1915

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Very good Jessica. Veterens day means alot to many of us but, a disturbing fact is that many young people seem to have no idea what it is for besides going to a bar/party and getting drunk or wasted. Even my stepson has no idea even though I have explained to him just what it means. As he said, I don't care, a day off for a party. Such a shame that here in America, our young people don't take one day to honour our Vets. Without our Vets, would they have the freedom to live free and party. As a gratefull American, I thank all our Vets, past, present and future. May God bless you and keep you safe.

Thanks Jessie for the poem!
I just passed here accidently and was curious what to find here. In my summer holidays this year I visited some of the battlefields in Flanders and the Somme and took photos of the memorials and cementries there, allied and german. If there is interest I could post some of the photos here.

Browsing the complete network I came across this site and Jessie's post. I know it it not close to November 11butI must reply. While I never served in the Armed Forces my father served in the RCAF during the late 1950' to the early 1970's. I respect all proper , military personnel. In Canada there is a bumper sticker and window ribbon the says "If you don't stand behind our troops, stand in front of them" People should be proud of their countries military servicemen and servicewomen, I know I am.
