It can be bought for less on ebay but it still seems like a lot of money. Especially if I don't use all of it. By my local hobby shop costs, 72 paints would cost $280. So I'd save around $80. Does it seem like a good buy?

Also, what's the difference between model color and the military paint sets as well as their WWII gaming paint, Flames of War?

I've used humbrol for years, so all the differences in vallejos paint line has made me a little hesitant.

What would you guys suggest?

The set might be fine for gamers, but looking at the color chart of what's included, I see a number of colors that you'd rarely, if ever, use on regular models. I'd rather just spent the money on what I need than invest in stuff that won't get used.

I just got into vallejo myself. I just got a few colors I knew I would use to try out and have since bought more individually. They are alot more user friendly, and they cover great. They smell good too.

The only real thing I am hesitant about, is what AFVFan brought up, that I'd only use a handful of colors and the rest would practically go to waste. Although I'm not sure if he looked up the color chart for the game color case or the military color case.

And now thinking about it, I don't think I've ever had 72 humbrol paints at once.

Does anyone have any opinions on their model air range compared to the other paints? I can see buying some model air colors for vehicles and normal paint for figures and landscapes. Does their regular paint still airbrush nicely?

yes, the regular paints AB very well. To me, some of the Model Air paints still need a tad of thinner, they seem to clog the airbrush too easy.

I can see using the majority of those military colors. Most of my humbrol paints have gone solid by now, so I'm gonna need enough new paint as it is. I'll see how many quarters I can scrounge up from between the couch cushions.

It's either a bunch of money on kits or paints/brushes and I need paint more than new kits.

There are a few different sets across all their lines of paint.

There are 2 in the Model Color line, one for basic colors one for military colors, but they are all colors from the Model Color line. As well there is a set from the Model Air line as well as a set from the Game Color line.

As far as pricing goes, if they are charging you $280 for the set....then I would say they are over charging you a bit. I sell the individual paints for $3.50 each, which would only bring 72 colors to $252 if purchased individually, as it is, the sets I would sell for $265, which adds the nice carrying case and 3 brushes to the set up, which is nice, only thing I tell people with the sets is that you can potentially end up getting colors that you may never use, so I usually tell people to just buy the individual colors they want, and it usually ends up being cheaper for them in the end.

I went through the list in the military set that Tim listed and found about 30 paints that I would have no (or very little) use for. The plus side is that you could probably offer the unused colors for sale on here and get some of your investment back from folks who build things other than armor. Taking that into account, and the $200 price Tim quoted, it's not a bad deal.

I bought the paint and some new brushes, winsor and newton miniature and some Raphaël 8404's. I'll do a small review when everything arrives, I'm not much of a writer or critic though. For me, if it works, it works.
