A while ago, the local grocery store had a collection of old war documentaries and movies for $5 and I picked it up. Recently I watched "Commandos" starring Lee Van Cleef.

I found it to be an engaging story and convincingly played (making allowances for '60s era acting and directing) but was confused by the end. The American commandos end up holed up in the Italian compound facing attack from German Panzers (i.e. American Walker Bulldog tanks painted with the Iron Cross) and both sides end up completely annihilated when a minor American character finishes off the last of the combatants—American and German—in an angry spree. Whaaaa??

I couldn't find out much about the film. Is it some kind of anti-war production? I'm confused. That seems like an odd ending to explain any other way, particularly when he and the lone German survivor clean up the battlefield together.

Anyone have any insight?

Sounds anti-war to me. Then again, it may be meant to depict the fraternal bond fealt between all soldiers.
