Looking for a good starter kit to copy parts. Any suggestions?

Micromark.com has a comprehensive starter kit for ~$95 plus shipping.

Hobby Lobby should have a kit but I've forgotten the brand name. Keep an eye out for their 40% off coupon.

Hobby Lobby sells Alumilite brand of RTV and resin. They have a starter kit of about a pint of RTV, and about a pint of resin for about $30. It is a good starter, but doesn't hold super-fine details.

I prefer Smooth-On brand RTV and resin to do my molds and casting.

Thanks everyone. I've been building the Lindberg Graf Zeppelin. It's a great kit, but the motors are molded in nylon...... I figured this is a good opportunity to kick up my skills a notch.

Use the Smooth On products. Been using them for years and get good results. Use th eslow setting 321 resin, it'll give you several minutes of pot life to work the bubbles out of the moulds. Alumilite sets up in about 3 minutes flat and you can't work it into fine details at all.

A quart kit of RTV costs about $35 and a quart of resin goes for about $30.

Expect to make a lot of crappy parts & moulds until you get the hang of it.

Where can I get the Smooth-On brand of RTV and resin

I have seen it at my local Hobby Town for $30 each and at Jerry's Artarama for $20.

Just thought I'd weigh in on this one as well. I think that Paul is right, Smooth-On is by far the way to go. I've been using their products and learning from their instructional videos (free on website) for years. I think that my own learning curve probably would have been much shorter had I started out with their stuff to begin with. Also, no matter what brand you end up with you'll probably have a disaster or two along the way. Don't sweat it, it's natural. And if you get stuck or need help figuring out how to do an odd piece or more complicated mold, feel free to ask. I can assure you, I've already made nearly every mistake imaginable so you don't have to.
