So what does anyone think of either one? I read that the author of the acccount that inspired both productions liked the movie but not the TV series.

In my opinion, both were great. I enjoyed the movie, and am still enjoying watching the show, even though it ended many years ago. These a both classic comedies, with great writing, directing, and acting.

The movie was great- the story followed the book fairly closely and all the performances were excellent.
I used to enjoy the TV show- it was funny but it was also overly sentimental and moralistic.
Weirdly the TV show lasted 8 years longer than the actual war

I liked both. I agree that the TV show was very moralistic and sentimental-- but maybe that was Alan Alda vs. Elliot Gould. The TV show dragged on as long as the War in Viet Nam did (although yes, it was supposed to be about Korea, but we all knew we were really talking about the current war).
The movie was weird in that it was like 3 distinct stories tacked together. Was the book that way?
