How many of you have built these or currently are building them?
Also what brands are good and what do you recommend for a first time builder?

Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron,

Artesania Latina puts together a nice kit and the instructions are easy to follow. A lot of their kits I would consider entry level (if you can consider any plank on frame ship kit entry level!) And are most times priced a bit more reasonable. A nice starter is the Mare Nostrum and at 1/35 scale a bit easier to work with.

Mamoli also has some nice ones that go together well. As do Corel and Mantua...well really all the brands are good. Depends more on subject, price range and scale.

You're going to invest a lot of time into one of these so pick something that really catches your eye. And if you have a cat pray she doesn't get her claws in the rigging after you finished it

Hi Ron
I've built several woodys and they are imense fun.
Have a nose at this site

I would recommend a Caldercraft kit for a first build ,the instructions are so easy to follow and the quality is superb
The Nelsons Navy range are stunning

Ron,

I would echo what Andy said—have a look at modelshipworld.com. Very helpful site with lots of great work and helpful people.

I bought the Phantom Pilot Boat by Model Shipways about a year ago. I've shaped and painted the hull, but haven't gotten past that. Very manageable it you're patient and have worked with models before (even plastic ones).

Whatever you do, start with a "solid hull" kit as opposed to "plank-on-bulkhead" or POB, as they call it. Much easier for a beginner since you can just fill in mistakes with putty.

Have fun! Just talking about it is making me want to pull that half-finished hull off the shelf.....
