I *KNOW* you guys have some great ideas on how to do it... Just tried searching the site, but was unable to come up with anything...

My M3 Stuart is WAY too clean!

I Do mud using a mix of Flour and brown paint but not too much flour *I Used the Brown Wheat Flour*

Then Take a brush dip it heavily in the Mix and dab it over the spots you want mud.

Mud on an AFV or mud on the ground?

Here are a couple of thoughts on mud
1. Use Household Wall spackle - either mix in paint first then apply with a dental pick type tool or apply then let dry and paint.
2. Mix white glue with sand, static grass, coffee grounds (seal the dio when done), smidge of water
3. White glue and baking powder
4. Pastel dust (lighter coats)

This is one of my early attempts and the color is very differentiated, but you get an idea..

For ground work I go with household spackle on a bed of celluclay. Wet your finger and then smear it around to get the soupy mud affects.

Hi,

I friend of mine wrote an article regarding creating mud. I've used the described technique myself and find it pretty straightforward and forgiving. Hope it helps and good luck with your project.

Personally, I prefer to use the real thing. I have collected about a half dozen colors of dirt from around where I live and mix in a bit of celluclay and a few drops of acrylic paint to match up the celluclay with the dirt color. Smear it on the vehicle and viola. Do the same thing for groundwork except I spinkle the dirt on top of the celluclay/styrofoam base, then wet it down thourouly with liquid white glue (Woodland Scenics)

Another mud idea. I use microballoons in paint to get the right "roughness" and thickness and just paint it on. In one step I get the base color and the coarsness. Plus Models has some nice mud, too.

I used premixed wall spackle mixed with tamiyas earth with some static grass and hairs from an old paint brush to do my KV1 ,once dry I used oil paints to creat the wet look .I also use pigments mixed with Tamiya thinner which works great too.
