One of the things I HATE about painting metal barrels and the like is the job of sanding them so that paint or primer will stick. I had thought about using automobile etching solution, the kind of stuff you used to put on bare metal to make paint adhere (I haven't used it in over 30 years, so for all I know, they don't make it anymore, LOL). Any thoughts?

,
yep Etch Primers are still available , just head to any auto-parts centre and look in the aerosol paints area.
Since I use a lot of alloy and brass pieces I regularly use the stuff. Just decant and use with an airbrush (have never had an aerosol can spray well ).

That's very helpful. Can you just brush them on or dip the part? Or will that gouge the metal and leave brush strokes?

Bill,
I honestly couldn't say what would happen with brush painting or dipping - never tried it myself. I've always found 1 or 2 light mist coats to be more than adequate for the etching/priming to get a good bite, plus with the various nooks and crannies on most of the bits I make I just find using the airbrush easier.

What about the etching solution damaging airbrush seals?

Never had any problems with the etch primer harming the airbrush seals. The etch primer I use (K&H) has no chromium compounds so it's no worse than spraying lacquers. After any spray session I always do a full strip down and through clean and have never had seal problems.
