Chris, check out Jeff Shaara and his father's trilogy, they were the base for the movie "Gods and Generals" and "Gettysburg".

Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure, both by Jeff, cover the time before and after Gettysburg. The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara covers Gettysburg.

Though they are historical fiction they are based on extensive research about the characters and events covered in the books. Basically a history book in the form of a novel.

Cheers!

Here's another good one: The Class Of 1846 by John C. Waugh.

And if you like Shaara, Gone For Soldiers is a goodie too: follows Lee and Grant and others through the Mexican War.

Cheers!

Battle Cry of Freedom, James McPherson
The Darkest Night David Eicher
Shelby Foote's Trilogy on the War.

Those will give you a good overview of the war.

Grant Wins the War by James Arnold
Twilight at Little Round Top by Glen La Fantasie
The Gettysburg Campaign, A Study in Command by Edwin Coddington
The 20th Maine by John Pullen
The Passing of the Armies by Joshua Chamberlain
Any of Gordon Rhea's books on the Overland Campaign of 1864
Look Away by Burke Davis
Landscape Turned Red by Stephen Sears
The Sword of Lincoln by Jeffrey Wert

Hope this helps you get started.

The American Heritage Picture History of The Civil War Published by Doubleday and The American Heritage. It's an old book, but a must for the Civil War enthusiast.

Killing Lincoln by Bill O'reilly covers the last 4 months pretty nicely
