I ask because I saw a Pit-Road kit of the Japanese Type 97 motorcycle, which looks good expect for obviously very unrealistic spokes on the wheels. Can the spokes be replaced with proper ones feasibly, and if so, how?

You might be able to adapt this technique.

Depending on the scale, I would try music wire. I've worked with this stuff quite a lot. It's great for grab-handles, support wires...etc.
