What are some of your preferred model kits and manufacturers for Vietnam era builds. I know there are tons of high quality WWII stuff out there so I wanted to know if anyone else tried their hand at other Conflicts/Wars?

Tamiya for the M113 A.P.C. they have. Pretty cheap, workable and not bad builds. Hobby boss m-706. Real nice kit. And the Mule w/ recoiless rifle (D.M.L.). Of course there are other resin and plastic kits, but more expensive. You get what you pay for as usual. But to start with the basic Tamiya sets, will give you a good start and a decint build. Helicopters are a different story. If you want accurate, prepare for some scratch building and after market stuff. They build up good o.o.b. but the purest will want to detail them out. There are many Huey's ( Panda, M.R.C. Dragon, Semonar plastic model)of different types, an Apache attack helo, but the tail rotor is on the wrong side except for the 1st type model. Two Cayuse helos come to mind. The D.M.L. and revell. The old Revell set (huey and Cayuse are 1/32 scale and show their age bad. And the granddaddy of them the Chinnook( trumpeter) is available. Plus the airforce rescue Huskey (testors) which needs alot of interior work, and a few Bell 47's (M.R.C. and revell). Brown water navy, you have the (D.M.L.) P.B.R, the L.S.S.C., and varrious landing craft and a resin P.A.C.V. and Swift boat. (very expensive) Also Trumpeter has some V.N. scale jets and revell has a phantom or two. Really, there are alot of choices depending what you want to build or depect. Just remember that what you buy is what you get. Check out the review's here and the build blogs for anything before you jump into an expensive build. And of course the people here will answer your questions about darn near anything to help with your builds.

Hi Mate,Further to Gino`s list,i built Tamiya`s M48 but added Verlinden`s resin update set - the price of which was well worth it when it came to the mantlet cover, set it off a treat as well as adding to the hull stowage.
If you can lay hands on one then do so !.

You forgot theItaleri and Academy M163 Vulcan SPAAG. I'm currently working on the Academy kit and it is by far my favorite.

Like I said...

"I'm sure I am missing some..."

For that matter, I missed the AFV Club M548, MRC/Academy's H13/Bell 47, and AFV Club's M41A3 as well. I'm sure there are others too.

You asked for my favorite, so...
You may laugh all you like, but for nostalgiac reasons, I like the Monogram M48A2 "Patton." Repops can be had at Michael's for about $15.00 with their coupon. You get to practice your painting skills just as much as if you had paid $50.00.

I'll be building the Academy OV-10A Bronco when the "Viet Nam: Trouble In Southeast Asia" campaign begins August 1st, here !
You're more than welcome to join!
thanks,
Sean H.

Also, Robert, good call on the Michaels coupons. I hadn't thought of that, but there's one by my work. I don't think of them for models, but that would present another variety when nothing catches my eye at the Local Hobby Shop.

The Michaels near me have a very poor selection of military kits. A few planes, couple of ships, and one or two tanks. The rest are all cars.

lets not forget the m578 vtr. you will need the verlinden conversion kit, it was a mainstay fo the armored ca, 11ty armored cav blackhorse regiment. had the body of the m110 8 inch gun and the crane and turret came from verlinden, a resin kit. my wife finally found me one on e bay for around 30 bucks. take a look anyway.
