I was wondering how many of you are Vietnam Vets? I served as a truck driver with a signal unit at Cu Chi RVN 1967-1968.

1974 to 1975, most people claim the the war ending in 1973 when the troops were being withdrawn, but i was there until the fall of Saigon in July 1975. I was with an intel group (who wil remain nameless). I retired in 1993 after 20+ years.

I served 6 years with the Army and in 1972 took a lateral transfer to the Air Force.I did 9 more years with them when got recruited to civil service as a dod Cop and worked as a Drug interdiction/combat specialist. That was until 1997 when are agency was shut down and got rifted. Lost a leg the next year (98) and forced into retirement. Can't complain though because now I build models and talk to you guys. Retirement is great. I keep plenty busy here. I have built a lot of models of gun trucks and other Vietnam era models for the brothers who requeated them.

Hi Dave,
I am not a vet but I was there in 1967-1968, Cu Chi was a 25th US Infrantry Division military base (Hau Nghia Province) nearby Hoc Mon and not far from Saigon, this military camp was very important on the 1st National Road (now is the 22rd NR) to Tay Ninh that kept the control against the VC came from Cambodia border, but there was on the VC "iron triangle" with the famous Cu Chi tunnel... I had seen many M113, M48 and Us trucks in the helvea plantation (rubber plant) belong the road to Tay Ninh. Just a little hello to you and for some Vietnam souvenirs. God bless you and your family.

It was on this road between Cu Chi and Tay Ninh that my truck was hit. I was about 15 Clicks east of Tay Ninh when I hit a mine. Long story short I got to go home after that.

Hi Phantom Major,
That is a good question, I hope that we have someone called like "I am **** of the NVA..." on this forum but I am afraid that is mostly impossible.
As your trips to Vietnam, you got some information about the vietnameses and their life.
A Tamiya 1/32 scale Phantom F-4 sold at 2,600,000 VN Dong in Saigon, a vietnamese earns 1,000,000 VN Dong monthly, I don't hope that modellers in Vietnam are many.
A computer cost about 2 working years without the internet connexion...
For me, It's almost hopeless. So wait and see.

My grandpa didn't served in vietnam nor fight there. But he did fight during that era of communist expansion in South East Asia. He operated in the jungles of malaya, and borneo as a special police unit which hunts commies in the forest.
He did quite a few tours in the bush, and see the first generation of AR-15 (m-16) fail in his own hands. Have nothing good to say about the weapon till he saw my own M-16 when he visted me during my basic back in 2002. He pass on last year June due to cancer. Now his ribbons, medals and photos are displayed and clean by my grandma every now and then. I do miss his stories and those moments when we shared combat rations which i brought back for him after my long combat exercise.
A salute to all those who did their time in the name of FREEDOM.

I was a Marine 1st Lt with 1st Battalion, 11th Marines from october, 1969 through October, 1970.

I spent a year in Monterey, CA learning Vietnames before I went over and was fairly fluent and literate in the language when I got there.

I started out as XO and CO of Whiskey Battery (Whiskey 6) (4.2 in mortars), 1/11 on Hill 10 southwest of DaNang. About 3 months into my tour I was assigned to a position that involved training the Viet Regional Forces in the use of mortars. After that I was assigned to Battalion HQ as the S-2 (Inteligence)/S-5 (Civil Affairs) and was also a battalion Fire Direction Officer.

I spent a while in the bush as an FO/Advisor to the 21st Vietnamese Ranger Battaion in the Que Son Mountains and west of An Hoa near the Laotian border / Ho Chi Minh trail.

I got two free trips to the USS Sanctuary for malaria and left from the big white boat via Army OH-6 for my "freedom bird" to "the world".

Vietnam wasn't much of a war, but it was the only war we had at the time.

Semper Fi,
Dave (Whiskey 6)
