Hi All
I have a question. I am now doing a wash of W&N burnt umber oils and Terpenoid on the panel lines of my A6M5c Zero. The under wing color is IJN gray. Should I let the wash dry before trying to clean off the touch points, or should I wipe it clean right away. I have already done some of the wash, cleaning it off immediately after with a rag lightly dipped in Terpenoid, but it seems to wash too much off. How is this done?
Thanks alot

hi

I normally wait for like 5 minutes till it looses its glossy apperance and then whipe it of gently

then the stuff you want on stays on and the stuff you want of gets off

On top of what zer0_co0l said, you can gently wipe it off wit a soft brush dipped in the same thinner used to do the wash...

Let it sit for a short time. I have used a Qtip dipped in Terp (lightly).
You may also play with 100% coverage wash. You do the same technique - only you wash the entire panel. It tones down the whole model so it may not be the look you want, it's just another technique.

Thanks everyone,
I always know were to come with a problem.

Captain tazz, just a note:
I tried using Grumbacher Academy artist water colors, but it didn't give me the effect that I was looking for.
What type of acrylic did you buy? And what is it mixed with? Also if you coat your model with an clear gloss acrylic coat (Future or Kleer), terps or a mild sprits will not harm the plastic. It also aids the flow of the oil wash.

:-) I would suggest that the length of time you leave the wash on depends on how thick the wash is and what, if any affects you want to create. I usually leave a wash on for several hours. This allows the wash to almost dry in the panel lines (oils can take a long time to dry). When wiping off, you may or may not require to have the cloth dampened with white spirit. It depends how thick the wash is and how long it has been left. When wiping off I look to leave a film over the model. It is not intended to have this "film" all over the model but it will add tones to the colour and will be stronger nearer the panel lines getting weaker further away. This affect might not be desirable, in which case I use a sludge wash (a wash heavy on paint) and leave it 24 hours. After this time the paint is vertually dry, so when the excess is wiped off it leaves no "film".
