i am thinking of getting into scratch buildin. having never done it i don't know the average thickness needed to have handy. as for other items the size of hex rods average, i usually do 1/35 scale.
any tips and pointers ?

You will be needing various thicknesses. This goes for all of your supplies. I've found .010" or 1mm rod makes nice nuts and bolts. I would recomend 2-4mm thick sheet stock to start. Really, you will find yourself collecting many sizes of stock as you go.
