Coming up on Remembrance Day here in Canada. A time to honour those who have paid the extreme sacrifice in the service of the greatest country in the world (IMHO). At this time of year, stop and thank a vet for all they have done for you.

As the grandson of a Gallipoli Anzac who returned, but left his older brother behind, I would echo those sentiments.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Lest we forget.

Thanks to all the young men and women who marched off when their country called.

I just wish we'd do more to remember the ones who didn't come back in one piece. Rather than have half price mattress sales.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,They fell with their faces to the foe....They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:...Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning,We will remember them.

Always proud to wear a Poppy, thanks to all who have, are and will serve their country in the defence of our freedom

This was one of the most peaceful and solemnly beautiful places I've ever been. It all came together for me here...the meaning of service, the concept of nation-building, the dedication and the sacrifices of those who went before us and for those that are still going. I cried like a baby there. I am again now just thinking about it.

Here's a letter that was in the Toronto Star today. I have to blink back tears every time I see it.

Quoted Text

Doug Middleton, Oshawa

This is a letter I have kept for many years. It is the last letter my Uncle Jack wrote to his family before going “over the top.” He was killed on Oct. 21 or 22, 1916 near Vimy Ridge during WWI. His name – John Eden Heyes — appears on the Vimy Ridge Memorial. He was 19.

October 16, 1916

Dear Father, Mother & all

Just a few lines before I go up to the front line. I am keeping this letter in my pay book so that if anything should happen, they will find it. We are at the xxxx(blocked out) and I guess you know by the papers that it is no picnic down here. I don't expect to go under yet but if anything should happen, don't worry, try and forget and remember that there are thousands beside me. I am happy I came over to do my bit and I am glad I came. You will know if anything goes wrong long before you get this letter. Well, I think this is all. If you get this letter remember that I did my bit, and don't worry.

Your loving son, Jack
