The September Kick-off Meeting will be held in the Military
Aviation Preservation Society (MAPS) Air Museum Aircraft Hangar,
where we will be surrounded by historic aircraft, a fitting setting
for our commemoration of the 100th anniversary of powered flight and
the pioneering efforts of the Wright Brothers.
The Akron Section of ASME is pleased to have as our guest
speaker another real pioneer of powered flight, Jim Bede of Bede
Aircraft Corporation (BAC). Jim is an internationally known designer
of special aircraft and home-built kits. Based in Medina, Ohio, he
has been featured in numerous aircraft publications and on the covers
of several issues of Popular Mechanics.
Homebuilt Aircraft Design and Development continued

In 1961, several years after graduating at the top of his class at
Wichita State and after working as a design engineer at North
American Rockwell, Jim founded BAC. A year after the inception of
BAC, in response to a market void, Jim designed the BD-1, a
two-place, low wing aircraft that startled the industry due to its
short development time, excellent performance characteristics and
exceedingly affordable price. It was featured on the cover of the
February 1964 issue of Popular Mechanics (“At last! Your $2500
Airplane”)
In the years following, Jim developed the XBD-2 and 3
research aircraft, leading to the issuance of 14 patents for highly
innovative processes and systems. In 1969, he set a record with the
BD-2 for maximum distance in a closed circuit (9,731 miles).
Also in 1969, he introduced the industry's first complete
aircraft kit, the BD-4, a two/four place high wing, featuring a
bolt-together, truss structured fuselage. Later designs include the
BD-5 (a pusher prop) and BD-5J (jet version, used in the James Bond
movie “Octopussy”), the BD-6 (single place sports plane), BD-7
(four-place concept plane), BD-8 (aerobatic design) and BD-9
(enclosed ultralight), showing the broad range of designs. The BD-10
was developed in the '80s as the world's first high performance
personal jet, and in addition to the general aviation market, this
design has been utilized as a military trainer and as a target drone
with supersonic capability.
Recent offerings from BAC include the BD-12/14 and the
latest, the BD-17 Nugget. You can see the BD-17 and get additional
information about Bede Aircraft Corporation at www.bedecorp.com and
