Im sure there are a variety of techniques out there.. i would assume that once you finish the final painting, apply a clear gloss coat, then decals using which ever setting solution you like. Then wash and weather.. Finally finish with a dull coat...

Base color
Gloss coat
Decal
Wash
Drybrush
Dull Coat
Pastels
In this way, your decals give the impression of having been applied at the factory/supply depot/refurbishing site andhave gone through the same wear and tear the rest of the paint has suffered.

This was helpful for me, too. I've printed out Al's order of operation so I can try it on this M5A1; so far I haven't had the expected result with a wash of oils....probably because of no gloss coat.
Thanks gang.

When you appy the wash, try placing small amount in panel lines, creases, corners aod and the base of rivets, rather than covering everything. This will reduce the need to wipe the excess off while emphasizing raised detail and accentuating shadowed areas.
