Hey guys I need some help, a great friend had passed away Monday. It’s going to be a short one day service and the color guard will be there and the wife was looking to have some of Bill medals display. As of tonight she has been able to find them. So I was looking over the DD-214 and was only able to come up with two….

Here is what is on the form…

NDSM AFM 900-3
AFQUA SO GB 459 1967 DAF
AFGCN AFM 900-3

So from what I can tell one is the National Defense Service Medal, Airforce Good Conduct Medal…right.
And the one I’m having a problem is the AFQUA SO GB 459 1967 DAF. Bill also served 1year 11months 2days on foreign and/ oversea service. Seeing Bill served overseas would he had the oversea medal/ribbin...there are two, short and long.

So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Joe

Joe,

My condolences to you and to Bill's wife and family.

You're right, National Defense Service Medal and Air Force Good Conduct. The "900-3" is probably the reg that governs award of those two medals.

I think the second one is a typo. I think its the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. AFOUA instead of AFQUA. I Googled "AFOUA" and I think the rest of it means "Special Order #GB-459, 1967, Department of the Air Force".

As far as the Overseas Tour Ribbons, they weren't created until the 80's so Bill is probably not be eligible.

I hope this helps, Joe. I think it's a great way to honor your friend's service. I'm an Iraq vet and its my honor to help out a fellow vet. Please pass my condolences on to Bills family.

Thanks Chris and I'll pass it on, and thank you for your service.

Upon further review you are right...

1. NDSM - National Defense Service Medal
2. AFOUA - Air Force Outstanding Unit Award*
3. AFGCN - Air Force Good Conduct

Happy Modeling,
Joe
