Do you know what a Great Blue Heron is

I have to tell you this story, because it`s true.

I was ice-fishing on the lake. I was alone with my dog, Joe. We were minding our own business on the ice. Also, a couple of trout I caught were on the ice. You have to understand that I was alone, on a wind-swept frozen lake, in Alberta, in April.

I was sitting at the hole, when Joe growlled. I looked up, and all I saw was wings. A Great Blue had come to visit us. It would not come close to us, because of the dog. It landed 100 paces away.

I settled Joe. I walked out, 60 paces, with two 12`trout, and laid them on the ice. Then I sat with Joe, fishing again.

The bird returned, saw my meager offering, and landed. This all against Joe`s better wishes.

I watched as the bird swallowed both fish head first.

In retrospect, I`m thinking that bird was hungry. Heron`s hunt by site, and we had a late spring.

I don`t care who you are. No one can get close to a Great Blue Heron. I did that day, because it was hungry enough to come close.

If this story is not told, it will be forgotten. My name is Guy, I`ve fought in two wars, and I`ve seen a Great Blue Heron swallow two fish.

The story is now told.

Guy

Cool. Those are very impressive birds. Never been very close to one. It is great that you could get that close.

There is nesting colony down in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park by my house. There are over 100 nests. There are always people watching on the road. It is great to watch them fly.

Don't say that too loud, or next April you'll be surrounded by Minnesotans.

Actually, a story like that explains why you love it up there. Take Care

I got pretty close to one once. I was on a dock in vancouver, and the heron was sleeping on the dock, behind a railing. I sat on the railing and accidentaly spooked it. It's wingspan is huge!
