It's a strange feeling day: my last day at work...I'm retiring today. I've been working for the Department of Developmental Services, formerly Department of Mental Retardation, in the state for almost 32 years. With budget shortfalls looming and RIF's all around, they offered a get rid of dinosaurs incentive that played perfectly into my age and years of service so I took the leap. The office is giving me a retiment party this evening. While I'm happy to be getting out, especially right now with our, er, my former colleagues', caseloads increasing to near 70 people each, I do feel some sadness.

Anyway, there's going to be more time to build and paint, ride the bicycle (a new all carbon one is in the offing), read and do volunteer "work."

Congratulations, Al! My father-in-law retired a few years ago after 30 or so years in a similar position with the State of Tennessee. He's really enjoying himself these days!

Well AJ, since I left MA 12 years before you went to work.. I can't say you ever worked for me But, Thanks for your service. And 30+ years with any employer is a rare thing these days.

Well done! With changes to retirement age over here and the government cutting back on pensions I'll have to work til I'm 150...

And dare I ask - does a carbon-fibre bike increase or decrease your "carbon footprint"?

Wow - congratulations on making that far. I have to think it would be very odd to be staring at retirement when every day has always had that 'work' thing coming at some point or another.
