I live in Julington Creek, a Jacksonville suburb. Anyone into armor in the area? Anyone remember "The Kit Bunker"?

Hi there, I am in NE Florida as well. Lake City.

There is a club that meets in Orange Park and there is another one that meets in Gainesville.

I am exclusively into armor and figures.

Are you an AMPS Member?

There is a show in Jacksonville called JaxCon every February. There is also a huge IPMS show coming up in Orlando in September called ModelPalooza. Check it out.

I live about an hour north in the Brunswick, GA area, but I drill with the Coast Guard Reserve in Jacksonville. I alternate between trains and armor; right now have armor projects on the bench exclusively and am "armchairing" the trains. And yep, I remember the Kit Bunker.

I am now at Ft Stewart, GA, but am from central FL. I went to college at UF and took the trip up to Jax to go to the Kit Bunker often. It was a great shop. I traded and bought a bunch of stuff there over the years. I am assuming it is long gone by now.

Not to hijack the thread, but speaking of hobby shops and Ft Stewart, Gino I recall at one time visiting a hobby shop with a nice selection of Tamiya armor somewhere along the main drag in Hinesville; I want to say it was in one of the strip malls in the vicinity of Hwy 84 and General Screven...any such place like that still there?

Yup, Big Top Hobbies. Unfortunately it is gone now too. I was here from '00-'03 and it was here then. It was a pretty good shop w/a great owner; Bob something I think. Now, there are no hobby shops in the area at all. Closest is a Train shop (Bull St. Station) in Savannah. Nothing else for over a 100 miles and it is a Hobby Lobby. Needless to say, I do most of my shopping on-line now.

Yes, that was indeed the name of it. And being I do trains also I am very familiar with Bull Street Station; I would go as far as to say I'm one of their long-time "regulars" LOL. We do have a Hobbytown in Brunswick, which is a little closer to Hinesville I guess; Ron has a pretty good selection of armor, mostly WWII stuff of the Dragon and Tamiya label. They order for me whatever they don't have in stock.

Back to the original topic: John,as far as shops in Jax go,do you use Hobby World or Hobby Oasis?

I've been to Hobby World a couple of times. It seemed that their armor models were very limited. A couple of people have told me about Hobby Oasis. I called the owner the other day and he said he has "some Dragon kits". Maybe I'll check it out next weekend. Seems as though everything must be ordered now-a-days, which is fine because on-line companies have large items to choose from. Neither store carried Vallejo or Mig products, but that didn't surprise me due to the products being a "niche item".

I think Hobby Oasis is trying to build his stock back up, as I seem to recall that right after moving to the present location and before they had reopened they had suffered a burglary and a bunch of stuff got swiped.

Any trip up to Jax wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Bob and Doug sideshow. They were good at getting that oddball kit that nobody else had that is before the Net came into vogue. Bob has passed on but Doug is still in business in one way or another.
