Hi Guys, I model In 1/48 scale & could do with a punch & die set to do the cockpit dials, to get them perfectly round. Will this punch & die set be ok to use. Precision Punch & Die Set: 0.160, 0.120, 0.089, 0.081, 0.059, 0.039 inch sizes, price $48.00 from Roll Models, also will they ship to England or better still Is there any modelling shops In England that sell them. Also can you guys tell me of any other tools which will do the same job for me & where to get them.. Thanks very much..

Hi Sean,

Yes absolutely! I would recomend purchasing the Sub-Miniature Punch and Die set aswell (punch dia. .018", .023", .028", .033", .038", .043, .048, .053, .058, and .063"). Granted its a little more expensive but well worth it. I have both punch sets, i use them all the time and I build alittle of everything. Take care.

The Waldron sets are very useful tools for all matter of scratch building and kit repair. I have both, from long before the price improvements.

You might also consider leather punches for a lot less $$ you can get a fair assortment of disk sizes. Tamiya has some punch tools also, kind of in between on the $, but limited in the hole sizes. Somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind there might be a UK outfit that does punches, Aeroclub or Historex comes to mind.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies, apart from me wanting to use the set for getting perfect round dials for the cockpit, what else are they used for & am I right In saying that the set I have mentioned, will be ok for 1/48 scale cockpit dials..

I just need to be sure, before I buy a set, there quite expensive arent they.

Need a real instrument expert here. My guess is that most instrument faces are going to be 3 & 4" (75-100mm?) in diameter. The .089 punch will produce a 4.272 dia face and the .081 will do a 3.88 dia face and the .059 will make a 2.83 face in 1/48. Close enough to most eyes.

Other uses? Well at one extreme I recall a Fine Scale Modeler issue in the '90's where a guy build up a radial engine (forget scale) entirely out of punched disks. I just used some .063 disks to fill ejector pin holes in a part instead of filler. There are a number of round things on an A/C that might have round covers, fuel tanks fillers, inspection ports, landing light lenses.

Bringing back an OLD thread, saw this linked to on another site:
http://umm-usa.com/onlinestore/index.php?cPath=21_145

Looks like a wider selection of sizes and slightly better pricing than Waldron.
