I've gone through FAQ, and I successfully managed (for a day) to post a signature image for my forum postings. But now, after being stupid enough to think I could tweak the image into a new one, I keep getting the dreaded red x in a white box.

I'm hosting the image off of a Geocities personal page, and I followed the instructions from FAQ. Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks

The first thing I would do is go back through the process again and get the name of the image one more time. You may have saved it with the same 'logical' file name, but I think there is the potential for the web hosting site to save it with a 'physical' file name that is slightly different.
So - if you haven't already I'd go back through and get the URL again and put that back into your account page.

It appears that your link is pointing to an html file rather than an image file. It should have a ".jpg" or ".bmp" extension. Or something similar.

Okay, I tried that and reposted it on a new geocities site, and it's still not taking. I've also created an index.html file in that website in case the website wasn't showing up. I must be missing something real obvious here lol.

Here is the problem,

The reason it doesn't appear all the time is because you are hosting it at Geocities. Geocities does not allow hotlinking of images. Here is the workaround: Rename the file to Armoramablurb.txt on Geocities and then edit the line in your siggy to reflect the file name change and it will work.

I have a tendancy to overexplain things and lose my reader so I won't explain why that works unless specifically asked.

Now the reason it appears sometimes is because it is in your cache from your working with it, when your cache clears it will dissapear. That explains the on again/off again you are experiencing. Note: that it only appears/dissapears for you. We never see it unless we take specific steps to see it.

You can also just post the image on the MSN site and use the Banners photo area if you don't already have an album of your own.

Ok, I like both explanations, so I'll try the .txt trick first and have banners for a backup.

Thanks again for y'all's help!

one more time anddd ...............................

Okay, Geocities wouldn't let me rename the file, and I may not be all that clear as to what url I need to use for the Banners hosting page.

I must have a REAL case of the stupids today, lol
