My condolences. My last 3 dogs I had to put down due to health problems. It was never easy and I felt as if I was cutting off my right arm. I hope she went quick and painlessly.
Hope the poem helps.

"Treat me kindly, my beloved friend
for no heart in all the world is
more grateful for kindness than
the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick,
for although I might lick your hand between blows,
your patience and understanding will more quickly
teach me the things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often,
for your voice is the world's sweetest music,
as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail
when the sound of your footsteps falls
upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet,
for I am a domesticated animal,
no longer accustomed to bitter elements.
I ask no greater glory than the privilege
of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water,
for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well,
to romp and play and do your bidding,
to walk by our side and stand ready,
willing and able to protect you with my life.
And, my friend, when I am very old
and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight,
do not make heroic efforts to keep me going.
I am not having any fun.
Please see to it that my life is taken gently.
I shall leave this earth knowing
with the last breath I draw that my
fate was always safest in your hands."
Hope the poem helps.

Sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is for you now.
Maybe this will help a little: Rainbow Bridge. I'd like to think this is the way it is.

Very sorry for your loss Rick. As I write this my Grandson is petting my Golden Retriever who is trying his best to wiggle his way into my lap, which is no small feat for a 95 pound puppy. Dogs are fantastic companions and I know you will miss yours terribly. My advice, hard as it may seem now, is to "get back on the horse" and immediately go down to the local shelter to adopt a new best friend. My wife forced me to do it years ago when we lost one and I've never regretted it.

Thank you Rodger. We do have another, younger dog that is healthy and was a good companion to Sadie. It was sudden, but not unexpected. She had a few prescriptions to take that made life easier for her. She answered the 'bell' every morning for another go at Life. If/when she decided not to do that then that would be the sign that it was 'Time'. We had all previously agreed a while back that "No heroic measures" would be the path in the event of serious illness or injury.
Al- Thankyou for your kind thoughts and the link.

My condolences on your loss,i feel your pain too.I lost my Border collie (terrier) cross,Mitzi,Over ten years ago and i`ve never fully recovered,
My wife said that she`d never seen me cry before, but the day i had to dig Mitzi`s grave my wife said i could have filled the hole with tears.
R.I.P. to both our four-legged friends - time can heal but never lets us forget.

I'm so sorry to hear this Rick. I know exactly how you're feeling. Our Sparky was also 16 years old when we had to put him down. He was almost blind, deaf, and in terrible pain from arthritis. I too cried that day. It's been 10 years and I still miss him.

Rick,
I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
May Sadie rest forever with clean, cool water to drink, soft blankets in warm sunlight to nap, and something to chase when she wants.

A little late but also sorry to hear of the loss.
Well better now for her and a good idea to go save one from the shelter.
We saved a cat last year and even though a pain sometimes when tearing up the rug a good deal for both.

Rick:
Just saw your post and I offer my condolences for your loss. It's amazing how these furry critters can attach themselves to our hearts, and what a hole it leaves when they are gone. The wonderful thing is there's always another waiting to help fill the void when you're ready for it again. They give all and ask for so little in return.
God bless,
Scott
