Whilst perusing through my hometown museums photographic archive I came across a mountain gun (allegedly) used by the British Army. Anyone know if or where these things were used?

I believe this is the gun you are referring to, the 3.7" howitzer.

Based on the date of one image on the site you posted I would guess they were originally intended for the North West Frontier of India. However, due to the portability, these would be equally at home in the mountains of Italy or the jungles of Burma. Whether or not they were used in action, I have no definite info, most likely they were replaced with the American built 75mm pack howitzer

on the link site it mentions eskmeals this is near sellafield nuclear plant in cumbria in the
uk it's a live firing site used by DERA (defence evaluation and research agency) of the
MOD they test new ship guns ect there I used to vist there some times when I was still
in the army they had alsorts of scrap tank hulls ect to blast I'm sure there was some soviet
stuff there and some old chieftan/centurian hulls along with a Conqueror tank there
the place was right out in the sticks and had loads of sheep(if your into that type of thing)

during WW2 the Australian Army designed a 'short' 25lb field gun based on the British 25lb'er. It had a complete new carriage without any frills and a shortened barrel. These were made in Australia and used as mountain guns in New Guinea as well as being air dropped to support troops both American and Australian in the Pacific. They ,when stripped, took up a fraction of the room a normal 25lb gun took up. :-)
