What's the best glue to join vinyl tracks (Tamiya in this case).

I'm guessing the two real contenders are polystyrene or cyanoacrylate (superglue).

So would it be

Liquid poly
Tube poly
Cyanoacrylate
Something else

Many thanks,

Nigel

Nigel,

We talkin' Tamiya's old "melt together" vynil? They can't be successfully glued with anything in my experience - even superglue lets go - so they must be melted together. Of course there may be a specialist vynil solvent out there, but I'd hate to breathe it!

Not really old - it's from a Centaur IV

There not the old type that had long studs with instructions to melt them with a heated screwdriver to form a rivet.

These have studs but only long enough to locate the right position.

Cheers,

I have not found a set of tracks that can't be glued with superglue yet. It is what I use every time. The key is to use clothes pins or some other type of pressure to hold them together until it is fully dry. If it is too tight and still continues to separate, I use staples to hold them together.

I sew the track together, then use super-glue on the thread. Works for me.

The newer Tamiya tracks (like those for the Centaur) can be glued with regular styrene glue, tube or liquid.

I do the reverse of capnjock - I glue then sew.
I use superglue to get a decent 'seal'. Then I use some household thread or a bit of very thin wire and wrap the two links together. I don't pull this really tight, just enough to support the joint so the glue doesn't get really tugged on.

I do this before I install the tracks on the tank.

I've tried most of the afore mentioned methods, but on my last one I did something new. It was one of the older Tamiya kits and I've worked with those before. So this time I dipped the connetion in casting resin. I think it turned out pretty good.

Hi Mate,i `ve used rubber solution glue on the odd occasion (yes, the stuff you use to repair punctures with !!).As stated previously,it depends on what the tracks are made of.
HTH Buddy.
