Did the German's have chaplins in the field with their soldiers like the allies did?
Or was it Verboten to be religious in the German army?

Chaplins, particularly in the SS, or was that not allowed?

Let me know please, Thanks!

The German army did have chaplins. Their uniforms differed from the norm, they wore no shoulder straps, and they had a cross between the eagle and cockade on their caps.

The collar patch had a violet backing, and was silver for chaplins or gold for field bishops.

i have read many books which mention padres with the german forces, catholic and christian. The germans were religious which explains why they did not annex the Vatican in Rome. That was left alone.
Also on the standard issue belts the buckle reads, "Gott mit uns" which means God is with us.

When I first saw the pic it was the split image of a relative of mine! obviousy it isn't as he flew with coastal command during the back of the war but I'm going to print it out and scare him with it lol. Should knock a year or two off his life heh heh #:-) #:-)

Wow, if I had been a betting man I would have said no given the persecution most religious groups went through either directly or indirectly. Learned something unique today.

Great, thanks for the answers. Now I have one more question for ou. Did the SS have chaplains for their men in the field, or were chaplains just all over, and everyone had them.

And, did chaplains were helmets with a cross on them like our chaplains did (at least they did in Private Ryan)?

Thanks

While I have no evidence to support this (only found three photos of chaplins, and all wearing caps), I rather doubt this. The Germans dont seem to have used painted insignia on their helmets, apart from the eagle and tricolour shield from the early stages of the war. I'm not even sure if German medics had the red cross painted on.
