Hi all -

Just finished watching 'Zulu' with Micheal Caine and Stanley Baker. There is a song in it that still haunts me. It is sung by the troops in response to chanting by the Zulu army just before they charged at dawm. Very stirring.

Can anybody tell me what the title is? I'd like to find the lyrics.

Thanks
betheyn

It IS called "Men of Harlech", it's a traditional Welsh folk song. There are several different versions of the lyrics. The joke is that in 1879, the 24th Foot WASN'T a Welsh regiment, it was the 2nd Warwickshire Regiment. It only became the South Wales Borderers after the Cardwell reforms of 1881, although there had been a Volunteer battalion that was so called before this date. There were only a few Welshmen in B company, there were actually more English (mostly recruited in Birmingham) and Irish (very common in British county regiments in the 19th century) than Welshmen.

Thanks Gentlemen - having the titled I found out about it

Apparantly the words in the film were written for the film. Odd how a bit of music can stick with a person like that.

Hi Steve, if you go to You-Tube and type in either 'Zulu' or 'Men of Harlech', you will get clips with several different versions of this song. Al
