Graduated from course 8326, a week before my 20th birthday. from Cornwallis, Nova Scotia I went to Trenton, Ontario for Trades Training. I was literally the last of 10,000 young men and women who were drawn not the Canadian Armed Forces under the YTEP Program, a last ditch make work program developed by the previous Trudeau government. Being the last of 10,000, the only trade left open to enrolling recruits was TQ3, 881 Postal. Spent eight weeks learning how to shuffle mail, mostly at a Canada Post training facility. Posted from there to headquarters building at CFB Edmonton. Spent close to a year there, but opted for an early release when it was obvious I would probably stay a postal clerk for a very long time if I stayed in. Spent the remainder of my 3 year term of service as a supplemental reservist. Probably would have been a lifer had I seen a light at the end of the trades tunnel, but couldn't manage the huge boredom that was the average day after the mail went out every morning.....not a good fit for a kid with ADHD, who was used to paying 5 or six hours of ball everyday, or running 120 plus Kilometers a week. I still don't do boring, monotonous, type activities, and I'm 52!

M1A1 tanker. Loved it. Even had "Tanker" as the religion on my dog tags...until another soldier mentioned it to a Lieutenant. The guy who made the dog tags mumbled something in Spanish about crazy soldiers when I insisted on that for my religion.

I joined Ohio Nat'l Guard in 1982..basic and AIT (for 05C) was split option. Decided to go regular army after my first AIT; went I went active (May 84), I lucked into an MOS called 26Y: Satellite Communications Ground Station Equipment Repairer. Spent a year in ROK; two-and-a-half miserable years at Ft. Hood TX, and then about 4-1/2 years in southern Germany (Bavaria). Re-assigned to DISA HQ in Arlington, VA, and then I got out at the end of 1993. Except for push-ups and weigh-ins, I enjoyed my time in the army.

Enlisted in 1972 (Australian Army) RAInf, 3RAR (Old Faithful) volunteered for Vietnam (no shortage of our blokes volunteering) but missed out.

1977 exchange with Canadian Army for 3 months.

Completed my first 6 years enlistment and "holidayed" in Rhodesia 1978-80.

Returned to Aussie land and reenlisted, fit enough to pass selection for a rather challenging posting to WA.
Then PTS for 3 years followed by 3RAR Airborne.

Remaining years cycled through FFBS Tully north Qld; and overseas.

Commissioned from the ranks, then wasted too many years as a Staff Officer.

Finally retired at 55 in 2007.

Anyone know what happened to this guy ?

Twenty-eight years ago, Herman James a Tennessee mountain man, was drafted into the Army.

On his first day in boot camp, the Army issued him a comb.
That afternoon an Army barber sheared his head.

On his second day, the Army issued him a tooth brush; that afternoon an Army dentist yanked several of his teeth.

On his third day he was issued a jock strap...... the Army is still looking for him.

I spent my 1 year of regular service with the Border Guard in 5th Border Detachment-Momchilgrad(Greek border) in 1995-1996.
I received training as radioman and switchboard operator.
I have the best of memories from my time protecting the peaceful sleep of my country and am proud to have been a member of that small, but elite force.
