I am thinking of getting an airbrush set, as some of my recent modeling requires greater detail. Is there an inexpensive kit that I can get, and if so, how much is it? (I just want an airbrush to get the job done, I don't need any bells and whistles.) Also, i would like to know if a nice finish can still be achived with a 3/8" flat brush (mine is a Model Masters).

Look at the recent topics started in this forum by "eyeball." There were lots and lots of comments and suggestions in this area in those threads.

In specific response to your questions:

Well, yes and no. What do you mean by "nice finish"? If you are refering to a smooth, even application of paint in a single color, yes, it can certainly be done; however, most find it easier to do with an airbrush. If you are refering to various mottling/feathered effects, the answer is basically no. There are a number of things that can only be done with an AB. Luckily, you only have to buy one, and then you're set with one of the greatest modeling tools in existence.

Well, inexpensive is relative. And "just get[ting] the job done" depends on what job you want to do. Most of the features on airbrushes are functional, and help to "get the job done." I think a good, sensible AB that won't break the bank but won't leave you wanting a replacement in 2 years is Paasche's VL. They've been around forever, they're durable, they're easy to learn to use, and replacement parts are readily available at hobby and art stores. But I'm biased, as it's the only AB I've ever owned. You can certainly find more expensive AB's like the Iwatas that offer even more control, and you may be able to find cheaper ones that sacrifice capability, but the VL is a nice middle road.

I suspect you're not going to be happy to learn what's involved in selecting and maintaining an air supply.... It's all worth it, though. Good luck, and welcome to Armorama.

One piece of advice I like to give people with airbrush questions, because it is totally based on experience, is this: Start out using Model Master Acryl acrilic paints. I have found that you don't have to thin them and they will be a great introduction into the once arcane art of airbrushing. Just stir them or shake them well and shoot them.
