Yesterday, August 1, was the anniversary of Operation Tidal Wave. I met Col. Walter Stewart, pilot of Utah Man, who as a young Lt. led the 93rd bomb group over the target after Col Addison E. Baker was shot down. His was the last plane to return from the mission, with 365 holes in the aircraft. His account of the battle is incredible. 178 aircraft took off for the target, 163 actually made it over the target, 109 returned, and only 30 were declared suitable to fly the following day. 300 men were killed, 140 captured and over 440 wounded. Five Medals of Honor were awarded.
