It was announced quietly in the media today that George Wahlen had passed away. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on Iwo Jima. As a US Navy corpsman he assisted countless wounded Marines during the first few days of battle, in spite of being wounded three times himself. His third wound left him disabled, but he still crawled 50 yards to aid another wounded man. He volunteered for service in Korea and Vietnam, and afterwords became a champion of veteran's rights, demanding better care and services for those who had served.

George Wahlen was very quiet about his actions and the award. His own wife didn't know he had earned the Medal of Honor because he never mentioned it. She found out when the President of the United States invited them to dinner. He never acted for himself, but was always willing to act for those who stood in need. He was an example to the end.

That is very sad. He sounded like a great man indeed.

Very sorry to hear the news,

Chas
