where did the chevron marking come from?

Hey there.

I've been wondering this for a long time: Where did the chevron marking for Coalition forces in Iraq originate? I know it was used in the 1991 Gulf War by Coalition Forces, but does it pre-date that? How was it decided to use the Chevron over some other insignia? Are the Chevrons used by the IDF related?
