Hello James, Robert Mitchum wasn't in "Run Silent, Run Deep", that was Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable. I believe you are thinking of "The Enemy Below", which also starred Kurt Jurgens as a U-Boat Captain. I thought Jurgens was excellent in that role, his best in a war movie. I also really liked Robert Wagner in "Between Heaven and Hell". My favorites have to include
Tom Cruise in Born on the Fourth of July, Peter Fonda in Midway, George C. Scott in Patton, Robert Mitchum in Run Silent Run Deep, the list could take me a week to write...... but those are a few that come to mind.
Honorable mention if you can call them war movies are Top Gun and of course A Few Good Men. But I think those go in another category. Cheers for now.![]()

I just watched 'Der Untergang' (The Downfall). Every actor in it was excellent but a particular standout was Bruno Gans as Adolf Hiltler. Absolutely brilliant performance...chilling....but brilliant.

Speaking of people acting in movies of events they actually participated in:
Richard Todd in the Longest Day. He was a member of the unit that took Pegasus Bridge. (Ox and Bucks I believe)

Laurel and Hardy in Men of War
Just kidding..........I did like Vick Morrow in the TV series Combat, and of coarse my favorite Marion Michael Morrison in just about anything that he did. The entire leading cast of Gods and Generals, and Gettysburg was pretty well acted too. Never was a big fan of Michael Cain but I think he was excellent in Zulu.

Barry Pepper in Saving Private Ryan. He's the character that really stands out in the movie. The scene of him in the bell tower praying while blasting away with his sniper rifle was outstanding!
