After you finishing with the decals and paintjob, everyone would like to preserve that job for years ... and each and every modeller has their own favorite varnish to apply to the model. I would like to hear which varnishes (matt, gloss or satin, and semi gloss) gave you the best results.

I have had the most success with airbrushed lacquer-based Dull & Gloss coats (for aircraft). I also have had equal success with airbrushed acrylic-based Future gloss & satin (a little Tamiya Flat Base mixed in) coats too.

Hi, I've always had real good luck with Model Masters Lacquer Overcoat, in either the Gloss, Semi-gloss, or Flat fihishes. I'e put it over Tamiya, Model Master, and Polly S paints with no problem. I use the Gloss on the vehicles before putting on decals as I've heard it's suppose to give a real smooth finish so the decals can settle down real nicely; plus a little decal setting solution as well. Then, when they are dry I, re-spray with either the semi gloss or the flat to seal everything.

I've also heard that a good clear finish is supposed to hep protect the paint and decals from the harsher oil washes and other scrubbing type or actions in the weathering process.
And I've also heard, but haven't tried it yet, that this clear 'covering' is supposed to work to seal on any pastel chalks too.

Haven't tried the Future yet, but I've heard good things about that too.

Take care, sgirty

The best matt varnish I have is a jar of Humbrol matt varnish It gives the best flat finish I have ever done, whether by brush or airbrush. I have used the same product in the past and not had quite the same good matt finish so I don't know if they have changed their product or if I have just dropped lucky and got a jar from a good batch. As far as a gloss finish is concerned I also get a decent finish from Humbrol gloss varnish but a lot of the guys here recommend Johnstone's Future (or Clear depending which continent you are on) so I am going to give it a try.

I use Testor's Dullcote (enamel) for my AFVs...
Ciao

P.S.: Gunnie, in which proportion do you mix T Flat Base and Future? I've got a couple of hundred botles of it and I don't know what to do with that so I'll be glad to give it a try...

Future gives a glossy finish. I use it with my airbrush just out of the bottle...
