Not a "tree-hugger," but anything that will help us, our world, and our environment has got to be good. If the material is as fine as extruded plastic, then why not??

Don't sweat it. Soy plastics (or something like it) would probably fill the bill. Plastics are such a part of our lives that chemical companies will have more eco-friendly replacements handy when it becomes economically necessary.
You had better worry more about the market graying and the number of producers drying up because of a shrinking consumer base rather than being priced out of a hobby (as hobbies go its definitely on the cheap side.)
